British Open Sombo & SportCombatSombo Championships

This is the second year running that this event has been held in Scotland and initially the BSF had doubts whether people would turn up because of the cost of travel and hotels but at the insistence of the Scottish Sombo Federation the event went ahead. The BSF certainly got it wrong this year with a host of competitors taking part and players from the USA, Russia, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Switzerland entering as well as Somboists from England, Scotland and Wales. The South of England was poorly represented with only one palayer from Kent attending the event, that was Jamie Marzetti who eventually won Gold in the Men’s u82k class. Interestingly enough BSF Officiall Colin Carrott, Martin Clarke and Keith Costa could all manage the journey from Kent at their own expense, maybe the Northerners are right about Southern Softies but have to fair how many Northerners and Scots travel South? It was good to see a full contingent from the North, North East and North west present. Clubs likes Mushin Academy from Liverpool have only been involved for a couple years but are doing their best to promote Sombo, well done Sue and your members.

Allan Clarkins Black Knights Burnley who totally dominated the Junior section and Ladies section, Allan has still got that enthusiasm to drive his members on. Shame we can not bottle that for the people in other areas.
Can not write about every match but some do stand out:
Finals of the Men U62k Yan Shi v Ben Morley
This was a very entertaining match especially as we do not get many entries in this weight but with more competitions under their belt they could soon make the British Team

EDGAR KUDZOUOYAN u68 kilo

As you can see by his name Edgar is of Eastern European origin and now trains with Vadim Kolognov form Glasgow, he is obviously an experienced Somboist not only did he win the Sombo but he also won the SportCombatSombo section and was voted technician of the day
Danny Roberts v Johannes Alder u90k
This was a clash of Titans the young Danny Roberts has proved himself by winning previous British titles and representing GB in World Championships the same was for Johannes who I believe is 10 years Danny’s senior also represented GB in World Championships plus winning British Titles. The match was very well balanced and technical but Danny mamge to edge a win with a points victory. This weight was the hardest of the day in fact it was the most contested event for the last few years.

GEORGI GEORGIEV U100k
World Class Judoka and Somboist Georgi now lives in England and gave a master class in Sombo in this weight, hopefully we will see more of him. I was some what sorry for Doug Fornett USA who just missed getting into the final by losing to Victor Scott on a positive attack this is where the referee gives a clenched fist sign indicating that the attempt was not worthy of a score but was a positive attack. I watched the match and thought Doug had the edge but when a match is so close it is hard to call. Doug has won titles in UK and Holland, I believe he would have been a different style for Georgi to contend with. Yet credit to Victor in his first Sombo competition to get silver is no mean feat.

The SportCombatSombo is a watered down version of the Combat Sambo as seen in the Worlds. SportCS insist you wear full face head guard, no striking to the head when the opponent is down and no knees to the face by doing this all affiliated members to the BSF are covered with Insurance. Those who entered the event proved very entertaining but have yet to grasp the fact that it is a Jacket Grappling art with strikes, yes you can knockout but full head faced head guard not very likely, yes you can score 4 pts by knocking your opponent down for the count of 8 but all the main scores come from throws, holds and submissions. On occasion the referee had to remind them of this. The World Championships have some of the toughest fighters in the World Fedor Emelianko to name but one, only about 10% of matches are one by Knockouts.
For those interested in a Combat Sambo competition they should have a go at the Bedford Open at the end of July see our http://www.grapplinguk.co.uk/forthcoming_events.htm

Finally thanks to BSF Chairman Robin Hyslop for organising the event, thanks to BSF Committee Members Keith Costa for being Competition Controller and thanks to Colin Carrott and Vadim Kolganov for being outsanding Referees.

The BSF has a Competition in Scotland and Bedford England in July, September we have the First Commonwealth Championships in Dumfries Scotland, November Red Star Sombo will be running a special event and in December the British CombatSombo Association will be hosting CombatSombo Wrestling Competition (this is very like Sombo but strangles ar allowed) in December at The BSF HQ at Sombo Centre of Excellence Sittingbourne Kent. BSF Coaches are available to Coach in all parts of the country
