British Sombo Open
April 30th 2011
DG1 Leisure Centre Dumfries Scotland
For over
20years the British Open has been held in England and mainly in Sittingbourne
Kent but last years entry was a bitter disappointment and the British Sombo
Federation EC decided to move the event north of the Border and put it in the
capable hands of BSF Chairman and Scotsman Robin Hyslop.
Robin has had
plenty of experience in running events in Dumfries over the last 30 years
running Judo events for the International Budo Federation, four years ago he run
the very successful IBF Multi Nation Judo Championships and for the last decade
run a Scottish Judo & Sombo Event. Many venues have been used but now he uses
the new Dumfries Leisure Centre, which has a large arena with seating plus a
large screen where the fights can be seen on the big screen and for this event a
brand new International size Wrestling cover was used, which made the whole
event look very professional.
The BSF
picked the worst possible time to change the venue in fact even to run the event
at all Why? Simply the economy you fool as some one said. For the first time in
the history of the competition we had no player from abroad purely because they
could not afford to come we have also seen our entries drop by over 50% over the
last 12 months. Yet despite all this numbers were still up from last year and
with the last government opening the flood gates and the present one not
shutting them to immigrants we do have many more Eastern Europeans living in GB
most having experience Sambo and some are now entering our events. Sambo doesn’t
seem to attract women or children which I find strange as:
Sambo is a jacket wrestling sport
like Judo, yet the rules are easier to understand and the scoring is not as
restrictive as Judo which can stifle the youngsters approach to competition.
It was pleasing to see so many
14/15/16 year old entering who put up some good shows of Sambo and some had a go
at the senior event. All the men’s finals were exciting but one of the best
contested events was the Masters Open, these Masters event in sport in general
are becoming very successful and is the only sports section seeing a growth,
this doesn’t say a lot about our younger generation.Equipment is very important
in any sport and wearing the correct attire is essential but in the case of
Sambo that is not as easy as most of the equipment comes from Russia and is
brought back by individuals. So people like President Martin Clarke had boots
made and they coming to an end and Blitz made a reversible jacket which can not
be used in Internationals but OK for National events, the good news is that
Martin Clarke is having jackets and boots made and should be on sale in a
month’s time. Under 18’s were allowed to compete without boots and matching
shorts and jackets, this was to encourage them to compete without a major
expense the seniors had to wear correct attire and as you can see by the
photographs and film it gives a better and truthful look of Sambo.
The under 68k under 18 class saw
Ben Franks from Warriors Sittingbourne up against Daniel Cook Carlisle Sambo,
Ben was favourite to win as he had won all his other fights in style. The fight
started of as expected with Ben throwing Daniel with a superb stomach throw for
4 pts, but Daniels would not just lie down and later he executed a perfect arm
lock to win on a Total victory and win the British Title. Ben was very angry
with his defeat so he entered the senior event in his proper weight 62k and won
the men’s title beating Steve Lauder Red Star Sambo with a superb pick up throw
an excellent result.
In the men’s
u74k saw some Eastern Europeans competing,
VINNY DROGAN Lithuania who now fights out of Woodside Grappling Club Bedford,
looked in spectacular form, winning all his preliminary bouts with Total
Victories. In the final he met EDGAR CUDZAHOYA a Russian who now fights for
Dynamo Sambo Glasgow, a very cagey fight but when they grappling on the ground
all of a sudden Edgar submitted with an arm lock and nobody saw where it came
from hopefully some one videoed this one. The Eastern European have a dead pan
look when they win or lose giving no emotion away, mind you they did get a smile
out of Vinny in the evening when he had a few drinks and we said we would not
send him home.
82 kilo class was
another interesting class with 17 year old Jamie Mazetti from Warriors
Sittingbourne storming his way to the final meeting 47 year old ROLAND NEWSON
Banbury Sambo the youngest meeting the oldest. It was a surprise to see this
veteran player reaching the final as he worked hard to get there, but one
forgets that he is a Judo 5th Dan and a ex GB Sambo International a
man with a great deal of experience. Something Jamie should have taken into
consideration although he won he did not storm through in this bout only beating
Roland by 2 points. Those veterans who keep themselves fit are still a force to
be reckoned with. Rowland also won silver in the Veterans Open losing to the
ever improving Scotsman Jack Tinning who dispatched Roland with an excellent leg
lock.
The light Heavy
weight was to be a rerun of last year with Danny Roberts Red Star Dumfries v
Danny Carrott Warriors Sittingbourne both men had to work hard to make the final
but Roberts looked in good shape especially as he beat Carrott in less than two
minutes with an arm lock
The Heavyweight
section proved a very interesting group with the big lads all weighing over 18
stone, Scotsman Jade Devlin Red Star last years British Champion was
favourite to win the o100k Sambo event which he did. He had no problem with his
preliminary bouts but was in for a surprise in the final where he met new comer
Michael Hutchinson. Michael was from the famous Warriors Grappling Academy
Sittingbourne and had been trained by Grandmaster Martin Clarke for just 9
months. Jade looked the more powerful at 6ft 6ins he was about 4 inches taller,
he attacked with a big throw but Michael counter this and had him in a hold down
where he scored 4 pts putting him in the lead. As the fight moved on Michael
managed to work Jade into a Armlock position but did not have the strength to
complete the move, the match finish with Jade winner by a narrow
margin of 2 pts. These two met again in the final of the SportCombatSombo
competition; in SportCS you wear a head guard have protective shin pads and wear
MMA gloves, this allows you to kick and punch. In SportCS the scoring is the
same as Sambo but you can knock your opponent out (with all the protective
equipment this very rarely happens) so the idea is to use kicks and punches to
weaken your opponent so you can throw them and gain a submission. That is the
idea but a lot of competitors once they put the gloves on seem to have a red
mist come over them and all they want to do is knock their opponent out and
Coach Clarke realised that Jade would be one of these, so he told Michael not
to mix it and let it turn into a brawl, just concentrate on collecting points.
Michael done exactly as he was told and he won the match 12 pts to nil a superb
victory. Both Michael and his 18 year old brother Tom are going to become some
phenomenal heavyweights if they keep up the training
The refereeing was of a very high quality this year a substantial
improvement on previous years.
Thanks must go to BSF Chairman Robin Hyslop who organised this
event in the beautiful part of Scotland
Our thanks also to John Clarke and Colin Carrott who acted as
competition Controllers, Table officials were Vicky Franks and John Sharpe,
Referees Vadim Kolganov, John Clarke, Robin Hyslop, Colin Carrott both Vladim
and Robin hope to visit Russia soon and qualify as International Referees.
The BSF intend running next years British Open at the same venue
and at the same time as the competition attracts a higher standard of
competitor. Competitions planned for next year March English Open Bedford,
British Open May Dumfries, Scottish Open Dumfries July, English Closed October
